Guided Game Drives in Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park | .

Both first time and seasoned safari-goers can benefit from taking advantage of guided game drives while visiting Etosha National Park. These guided drives are offered from all the main rest camps within Etosha as well as selected private establishments bordering the park.

Guided game drives give you the chance to relax and enjoy searching for game without the hassle of driving yourself. They also increase your chance of sightings simply by virtue of more eyes looking at the same time, as well as the presence of an experienced guide.

There is a certain charm to sharing your experiences with fellow safari-lovers and getting to meet like-minded guests too. The uncovered freedom of travelling in an open game drive vehicle also gives you an elevated vantage point and adds a new dimension to your journey in Etosha.

Guided Game Drives 101

Most guided game drives accommodate up to a maximum of 10 people (with a minimum restriction of 4) and depart three times a day from Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni camps. Children over the age of 5 years old are welcome to tag along.

The morning drive sets off as soon as the gate opens at first light; the afternoon drive leaves between 2pm and 3:30pm, and the evening drive takes to the road at 7pm. Drinks are provided during your drive and a breakfast pack is included in the morning drive.

The drives are 3 hours in duration and have no set route. Rather, they are based on the day’s game sightings, the season and your guide’s personal knowledge of where you are likely to come across game in the area.

What to expect en-route

You may get to visit some of the following well-known waterholes on your guided game drive depending on your point of departure.

From Okaukuejo:

  • Ombika natural spring
  • Okondeka waterhole which is well-known for lion sightings

From Halali:

  • The two pools of Goas

From Namutoni:

  • Klein Namutoni fountain
  • Chudup perennial spring
  • Fisher’s Pan where thousands of flamingos are known to hang out

Your guide

All the guides are highly trained and experienced individuals who will keep you enthralled with a wealth of knowledge about the animals, plants, insects, birds and landscapes you may come across on your travels.

Guided game drives are a popular activity and must be booked in advance. You can do so at the same time you reserve your accommodation in Etosha National Park.
