Warthog

Warthog in Etosha National Park, Namibia

Did you know ...

  • ["The name warthog, comes from the four large protrusions on the side of the head."]

Warthog are never found far from a source of water with a nearby hiding place or escape route from lions, which hunt them voraciously.

In the Okaukuejo area, they are only seen at Ombika but they are most numerous near Namutoni where all the waterholes meet their requirements.

These comical looking creatures are amusing to watch as they scuttle away from danger, real or imagined, at high speed with their tails sticking straight up in the air or as they kneel to graze and drink at the waterholes. The name warthog, comes from the four large protrusions on the side of the head, which serve the dual purpose of defending the males from attacks by rival boars and as fat reserves. The most famous warthog of all time is surely the lovable character, Pumba, from the Lion King animated movie.
